En Occident, une conception dévalorisant les animaux a été mise en place à partir de l’antiquité gréco-romaine ; reprise par une version majoritaire du christianisme, elle a été diffusée dans la philosophie et la science jusqu’au XXe siècle. Mais depuis le XVIIIe siècle, une autre conception a été peu à peu développée, revalorisant au con- traire ces animaux, militant pour leur prise en compte, obtenant depuis peu un fort écho et créant un débat sociétal.
